Mosquito Magnets

Our most recent and most expensive ally in the war on mosquitoes is the carbon dioxide device, more commonly referred to the 'mosquito magnet.' Mosquito magnets operate by emitting a steady stream of carbon dioxide, heat, moisture and octenol, generated through a propane tank.

Since the carbon dioxide that humans naturally exhale is what attracts mosquitoes to us, the mosquito magnet simulates human breathing and instinctively lures mosquitoes into its trap. Once a mosquito flies within range, the mosquito magnet sucks them into its net where it traps, dehydrates and kills them.

Because mosquito magnets are powered by propane, no electricity, electrical outlets or extension cords are required. Mosquito magnets are mobile and can be taken on camping trips or placed anywhere on your property.

A company called American Biophysics claims that their mosquito magnets - the Mosquito Magnet Liberty and the Lentek Mosquito Trap will devastate a property's entire mosquito population in six to eight weeks. Unfortunately, no scientific study has been performed to support these claims. However, the U.S. Coast Guard does lend support to the effectiveness of these mosquito traps.

Did You Know?

Only female mosquitoes bite to obtain blood for egg development. Males feed on plant nectar.

In addition to being irresistible to female mosquitoes, mosquito magnets are also tempting to biting midges, black flies, and sand flies.

Mosquito magnets cost $250 to $700. Mosquito magnets require new nets every 2 to 3 months. A package of three replacement nets can be purchased for about $20 while a pack of six costs about $40 online.
