Mosquito Netting
Mosquito netting, a precaution previously only taken in tropical countries, has become useful for mosquito control since the West Nile Virus migrated to North America in 1999. Now, U.S. and Canadian citizens living in mosquito infested areas, near standing water or when traveling to cottage country in damp summer months, should wear mosquito netting for protection against mosquitoes, black flies and other biting insects.
For the best protection, mosquito netting should have mesh large enough for air circulation, but small enough to keep out mosquitoes.
Mesh with holes 1.2 mm x 1.2 mm is recommended. Mosquito netting is available in tarps, infant netting, hanging and erect tents, in mosquito head nets and full body nets for between $5 and $100 online.
When working or walking in mosquito-populated areas polyester or polyamide mosquito netting is best because it offers lightweight, long-lasting protection, and is available in various mesh sizes. Mosquito netting made of cotton is more susceptible to dampness, and weighs more, however, when sleeping outdoors, cotton mosquito netting is considered to offer the best sleeping comfort and can be sprinkled with water to keep cool and promote air circulation.
Did You Know?
Most mosquitoes live and feed within 1 mile of their breeding ground.
When working, walking or sleeping in areas with large mosquito populations, cover yourself with mosquito netting in the following manner:
- Mosquito net should drape over you but offer no contact between the skin and net as mosquitoes will bite through these surfaces.
- Tuck mosquito netting into boots and clothing or zip completely.
- Mosquito netting should be used over children in strollers, baby carriers or playpens when camping.
- When sleeping, tuck mosquito netting under mattresses.
